Fit people don’t go to gym. Know their Strength Secret

There is a better alternative for you than gym

India has witnessed a tremendous increase in the number of youths going to gyms and health clubs. Well, it is a good thing that they want to keep their body fit and healthy. But, even after spending hundreds and thousands of money every year on gyms and health clubs, are we truly gaining anything out of this habit? Is gymming really its worth? Isn’t it a huge waste of time? Let’s explore this further.

The 2,900-crore fitness and slimming market in India (as on 2013) is projected to grow to 500 billion or 50,000 crore by 2030. People are increasingly becoming health conscious, thanks to modern day illnesses and Baba Ramdev. And, with the growing disposable income, they are ready to spend on gyms to keep themselves in good physical shape. Depending on the location, the membership of a good gym or spa ranges from 20,000 to 60,000 per annum.

Why all the fuss about going to a gym?

People go to gym to reduce their body fat and to make an unsuccessful attempt to develop a six-pack ab. If you see the larger picture, the whole gym routine is just to make you feel better about yourself.

According to a study published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, Yoga (an ancient Indian science and a $27 billion worth of industry in the U.S. alone) is better at boosting memory and concentration than vigorous exercises in the gym. You can read more such studies in the “Suggested Reading” section at the end.

So, if you are going to a gym for the following reasons then you are misleading yourself:

  1. Doing exercises at home or in a park is very boring and there is no motivationGym for fitness or to socialize-Action Wanted
  2. It’s impractical to keep or purchase all the equipment at home. In a gym, all types of instruments are available for a complete body workout
  3. Different groups can be joined in the activities of interest. So, even if one doesn’t like circuit training, the person can opt for group cycling, step aerobics or some unusual offerings as Bollywood dance, belly dance, hula-hooping, jump rope circuit, and adult Twister
  4. One can mingle with like-minded persons, socialize, make more friends, and increase social network. It thus acts as a stress buster
  5. Lose weight and excess body fat
  6. Build muscles, tone up and look better
  7. Increase your sex appeal

It’s high time now to dispel all your myths that you need a gym to loose body fat. In fact, sprinting, skipping, and other fat burning exercises like “Surya Namaskar” can be performed to achieve the desired result.

Going to a gym and take expert advice in return for a fee is good if:

  • You want to be a bodybuilder and participate in a body-building competition like Mr. India
  • You are seeking a role in some TV program or in films
  • You intend to participate in fashion shows and other media events

But, if you are just following the gym fad aimlessly then it’s better to start a daily practice of some yoga asanas at home or in a group in general or Surya Namaskar in particular.

Surya Namaskar-Action Wanted

Is it correct to compare a gym routine with Surya Namaskar?

Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation is considered as the BEST exercise in the world. It can do to your body what months of dieting cannot. No doubt, Jennifer Aniston, Victoria Beckham, and Kareena Kapoor are endorsing it over gym workouts and bizarre diets. Some of the benefits of doing Surya Namaskar every day are:

(1)    Surya Namaskar is a very effective cardiovascular exercise and improves the functioning of the heart and lungs

(2)    It improves the blood circulation of all the important organs of the body

(3)    Strengthens the muscles of the arms and waist

(4)    Makes the spine and waist more flexible

(5)    Helps in reducing the fat around the abdomen and thus reduces weight

(6)    Improves digestion, detoxifies your body, and makes your skin radiant

(7)    Keeps your sugar under control

(8)    Improves concentration power

(9)    Surya Namaskar is also known to be very effective in people with insomnia

(10) Practicing Sun Salutation daily helps balance the three constitutions – Vata, Pitta and Kapha – that the body is made up of

I totally agree. I am posting this on my FB wall. Let people shed the misconceptions of hitting the gym. Many made fun of me when I joined gym since I am lean and was never fat. My idea to exercise is to build stamina and of course keep fit. In the busy times when we hardly get time for the simple pleasures of life, why disrespect our own body which is a temple. Thanx for writing an amazing article Rupesh!!! Loved it.

Thanks for your comment Shilpi 🙂 I hope that we will soon understand the value and benefits of YOGA, which has already become a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States.
