Commonwealth Games — A Boon or a Bane?

Shera-Action WantedCommonwealth Games-Action Wanted

The XIX Commonwealth Games in New Delhi is more popular in news for its mismanagement and over expenditure than for its sparkling new stadiums.  It has become an issue of heated debate among various news channels with several eminent thinkers pouring their wisdom on how the entire work should have been better managed. But, the most important question over here is can we justify the expenditure of Rs. 70,000 crores spent in organizing these Games? Are we ready for the repercussions? Let’s explore.

CWG 2010 has provided a sort of impetus to the ailing sports infrastructure in the country in general and New Delhi in particular. We can now boast of up-to-date stadiums equipped with modern facilities. As a preparation towards the Game, New Delhi has updated and strengthened its Public Transportation System with the introduction of a fleet of low-floored CNG buses housed in Asia’s biggest depot. The Games Village has been built on time as per the international standards and are claimed to be better than any previous arrangements made in the history of Commonwealth Games. The heart of Delhi, popularly called as CP, has undergone a sort of cosmetic surgery. A growing network of Metro trains linking various destinations has added icing on the cake.

The Games has been strongly criticized by many sections of the society including the former sports minister Mr. S. Manishankar Iyer who has even decided to boycott these Games by moving outside the country during the Games. The increased expenditure, which got inflated further due to widespread corruption, can by no means justify the earnings of the Delhi government. This has created inflationary conditions in the city’s economy with all the goods recording a high price rise. The Delhi government has borrowed extensively to provide funds to hungry contractors. This includes utilizing the corpus reserved for pensioners, consuming the Public Provident Fund, and borrowing from the Central Government. The Game has also been criticized for its gross mismanagement and absence of proper planning.

All said and done, the Games is all set to open to a bright start. It is only hoped that these Games will not only provide employment avenues but also the required infrastructure for sports.

My question to all readers of this article is:-

  • Do you think New Delhi should now continue organizing such Games in future?
  • Do you think the funds could have been better utilized elsewhere?
  • How can we eradicate such widespread corruption eating away our hard-earned money?

Pour all your thoughts on this platform because as I always say:-

“ Its Your Life, Its Only ONE Life,

Its TIME to ACT, Its TIME to take ACTION,

Because it is WANTED!!”
